Week 29 Recap

The start of the week has brought the end to our time in Lake Tabourie (if you missed Week 28 recap) and back to visit Nanna and Nonno. We packed up the final pieces at the caravan park and said goodbye to the rainbow lorikeets and headed to Sydney. On the way back to Sydney we discussed the possibility of upgrading our tow vehicle. We have time to research what we want.

We have a cunning plan on what we want to do next and now we just have to see if we can make everything happen as quickly as we want. We had planned to stop in Nowra on the way back to check out some caravans but decided that it would be trickier with the trailer and easier to make a trip back on another day.

Once we made it back to Sydney, we unpacked some of our cars and picked up mine. It feels weird being the driver, after not driving for the past few months and my car feels low to the ground after being in Cookie Monster. Jamie and I spent the evening looking at new and used cars. We did try and set a budget as well as being realistic on what we want. That night we decided we would make some repairs to Jamie’s car, being the cheaper of the options and we would concentrate on what kind of caravan we would buy. We also discussed selling my car, it seems silly to keep a car that I drive for a few weeks before leaving it for another few months or more.

We got to celebrate Jamie’s 40th birthday with his family, which I think he really loved. We had a little party at Nanna’s house, nothing fancy but fun all the same. Little miss helped Nanna make the pizzas, sampling the toppings as she helped. We got Jamie the yummiest cake, a tiramisu torte from The Cake Merchant. Little miss decided the cake needed some extra sprinkles; half the fun is decorating the cake.

Little miss had a lovely time playing with her toys and seeing our family. It’s lovely to catch up after being away. We did have a few issues with little miss and her little bed at Nanna’s. She fell out of bed a few times and we had to rearrange the pillows to make a bit more of a barrier. We also had the problem of the shutters being too dark. Although they block out the light and noise, little miss has been used to having some light and being able to tell when it’s morning. With the shutters down we had many mornings of her little voice calling out, has the sun come up yet? We figured out pretty quickly to leave the shutters up a little, and that’s enough for her to be able to see when it’s morning.

Nanna has a swimming pool, and she got some really cool floating rings and animals. Little miss loved the llama the best. She had an absolute ball playing in Nanna’s pool with Jamie riding the llama. Funniest of all, she kept calling it alama.

While we were away Nonno celebrated his 70th birthday. He wasn’t able to go out for lunch for his birthday, so it got rescheduled to when we were back. Jamie had been really disappointed when he was going to miss out the first time, so I could tell how excited he was to be able to go.

We had a great time chatting with family that we don’t get to see very often and telling them all about our plans for our future travel. Little miss and I got to eat some delicious salmon, and birthday cake is the best. Little miss had a great time playing on the grass, the playground and looking at the goats. Its not often you get to visit a restaurant that has goats. The best part of all was at the very end, we finally got to give Nonno his birthday present. I’ve never seen someone move as fast as he did. He was out of the restaurant with a massive smile on his face.

The birthday present? He got to drive a Ferrari home from the restaurant. He was so excited. Jamie had to drive Nonno’s car back, so we all met back at his house. When we get there I see Jamie sitting in the Ferrari, thinking that he was just getting a photo. No, he got to take it for a drive around the block. He was super pumped. Not every day you get to drive a Ferrari.

Coming down from the high of driving a Ferrari we sat down to write a list of all the things we wanted in a caravan. I’m sure anyone who has looked at caravans will know that there are so many options.

Our list of must haves are:

  • Shower and toilet
  • Inside kitchen
  • Microwave
  • Air con
  • Fridge
  • 2 beds
  • Be 18 foot or under
  • Be around 2 tonne fully loaded
  • Have off road tyres and suspension
  • Be within budget

Our original budget was a lot more than I was comfortable spending but I wanted to be open to finding the right caravan.

We did find a second-hand caravan and took the long drive out to see it. We left Little miss with Nanna for the evening, I think they both had so much fun together. We spent ages looking at the caravan, but ultimately decided that it wasn’t the right caravan for us. Unfortunately, it had water damage, and we just couldn’t take the risk with water damage. The price range was better for me but we just couldn’t take the risk with such a big purchase and water damage. The positive of it all is that we have found a layout we like. That includes everything that we want. We may just find the perfect caravan after all. The only problem is going to be if we can get it in the timing that we want.

The one bit of advice Mrs Meddler and Mr Butinski gave us, don’t buy the first caravan you see. We didn’t buy the first caravan we saw.
