To See In NSW - Killen Falls

Here we are at week 11 of our trip and exploring the surrounds of Ballina, NSW. We met another travelling family we met in Evans Head and they suggested that we visit Killen Falls. It sounded lovely and from the little I googled it seemed to be a good activity to do.

We are in school holidays but after the long weekend. We thought it would be quiet being a week day, boy were we wrong. It was super busy. We had packed a picnic lunch and swimmers (it was a swimming hole after all) and set off.

We should have cottoned on that it was busy when there were so many cars parked up along the street as well as a lot of people walking back up the track. We walked along the track to the lookout. It was a little uneven and lots of tree roots (not suitable to people with mobility impairments). The lookout was amazing, you can see the top of the waterfall and emigrant creek. Absolutely amazing and perfect spot for taking photos.

We then continued on the track following the sign to the base of the waterfall. When we approached the top of a steep decent I knew it was going to be a bit tricky. Little miss and I are both a bit clumsy on flat ground with no trip hazards so we took extra care going down (Jamie and his long legs and expert balance had no trouble). Luckily they had installed some metal side rails, which gave me something to grip onto as we descended. Little miss did spend a bit of time scooting along on her bottom on the really steep bits.

Once at the bottom we then had to navigate along the uneven rocky creek bedside to the base of the waterfall. As We went along Jamie was getting a little impatient and I was struggling with Little miss, so he took her and I went on ahead. It was much easier when I didn't have someone throwing me off balance (not her fault at all). We took a few photos at the bottom and looked around the base, no where to really have a picnic. We should've realised when we saw people having a picnic near the parking when we arrived. The bottom is rocky all around the water hole and with so many people and knowing we had to get back up we turned around and headed for the car.

I carried little miss on my hip as we made our way back over the rocky creek bed. We did stop and see a carpet python slithering in along the side (very proud of myself for not freaking out). Lots of people stopped to look, once it moved on we kept going, stopping to let other people who were faster past. At the base of the steep incline I moved little miss to my back (must easier to carry her that way) and was relieved at how small she is. Another lady was going up in front of me. We moved up very quickly, Jamie said it looked funny from behind, and I kept up with her.

Once we were at the top we made our way slowly along the path, stopping to take photos along the way. Back at the top we hopped back in the car and had our picnic in there. Covid 19 means if we're eating out we sometimes eat in the car, as it feels safer for us not being near other people.

After lunch Jamie and little miss waited in the car while I did the short walk to the dam wall (I don't think Jamie was game after the previous walk). It was easier and much shorter. Am I glad we went? Definitely it was amazing. Would I go again? I'd go by myself and not take Little miss. It was much harder with her and she was a bit disappointed that we didn't stay for a swim.
