Week 3 Recap

We are really just learning as we go, we have never done anything like this before. I thought it would be good to look back and recap each week, to see what we have learned or adventures we've had as we journey through this beautiful country of ours. I'm starting at week 3, because for the most of week 1 and week 2 we were staying with my parents and getting ready to go.

At the end of week 3 we have made to it Sawtell, NSW. We stayed at the Big 4 in Sawtell.

We had a stop over for one night in The Entrance but we didn't set up the camper trailer, we stayed in a motel. Why? We were travelling 850 km over 2 days and wanted no stress. Being so new to everything we also weren't confident about travelling so far and having enough time to set up and pack down.

We made it to Sawtell with time to set up, but one thing we hadn't thought of was dinner. All the shops were closed but the butcher so Jamie grabbed a cooked roast chicken. We had a few bits and pieces, so made do with what we had. When setting up we didn't put up the walls of the annex, it was getting late so we decided to wait until morning to set them up. It also meant eating dinner inside which went against our no food in the camper trailer.

We did eventually set up the walls (there was a lot of whinging from me, because I wanted them up and Jamie didn't) but we finally got there. The same happened with the PVC floor (It just feels cleaner to me having the floor down and it keeps the walls secure).

Little miss and I looked at the local shops (super handy having an IGA or small grocer close by to pick up bits and pieces) and she finally got to see a kookaburra. Little miss had been convinced it was hyenas (a little too much watching the lion king and visits to the zoo).

We also explored the beach. We stayed at the big 4 that had a walking track down to the beach. Super convenient being so close to the beach it's a great free activity (I'm all for free activities). We have a bright swim vest that little miss wears, not only does she stand out but also gives us peace of mind if she falls in the water it gives us time to get to her. We got ours from BCF. Jamie tried to teach me to skip rock, I just couldn't get the hang of it.

After a fantastic morning playing on the beach we came back to our camp site to what we call the BUSH TURKEY incident. If you know us and ever ask in person we will deny it ever happening (it was so embarrassing) but if you click the link you can read about the incident.

We made a trip into Coffs Harbour to get some bits from Bunnings as well as do a grocery shop. We also started to make plans about where we wanted to go and what attractions we wanted to see.

Lessons we learned:
  • Lock up everything
  • Take your time setting up your site
  • Children will want to take every rock and shell they find at the beach
  • I can't skip rocks
  • Sand gets into everything
  • Expectations need to change

Places we visited:
  • The beach
  • Local shops
  • The playground
  • Coffs Harbour
