We decided to stay in Sawtell, NSW at the Big 4 for 2 weeks (if you missed out on our Week 3 Recap). Being so new to everything we wanted to have an opportunity to see everything we want to see, but we also aren't on a timeline of having to return after a certain time. Why rush if we don't have to? It also gives us some time to get into the swing of living on the road. I will admit we were a little rattled by the BUSH TURKEY incident but carried on.
This week was an action packed week. I had Googled all the things to do in Coffs Harbour and had a list of things to see. We have been to Coffs Harbour before, and even contemplated moving there we love it so much. All the other times we've visited we haven't really stopped to do the attractions and now that little miss is that bit older it made it all the more fun to see.
First stop was BONVILLE HEADLANDS. A quick 3 km walk up a small hill. Absolutely worth the walk, we did also have an ice cream on the way up. The view is amazing.
We couldn't visit Coffs Harbour without visiting the BIG BANANA! Little miss was so excited walking around saying it was banana day. We can't do a big thing adventure without going and seeing the most famous one. I remember visiting as a child, it has changed so much compared to what I remember. It's an amazing park and geared and families and kids. Very easy to spend big, by the time you add rides, food and treasures. We did choose to forgo a few activities, with Covid 19 we decided it would be safe to skip any of the indoor cinema viewings, and the water park and ice skating rinks were closed. We did still have lunch on the balcony which was lovely (and really yummy food). As well as a trip to the reptile house and visiting the shops.
This week we stocked up on stamps, little miss loves to send letters, you can never have too many stamps. She did also discover that the newsagents have some amazing magazines for kids and it's hard to chose only one.
We had plenty of visits to the beach, little miss decided she wanted to have a picnic party for lunch at the beach. How could we not? Except for the sandy food it was a pretty good picnic party. Little miss loves her olives and berries (not together) so they were a must pack. As well as veggie sticks and dips and a few sandwiches.
Saturday morning we headed to the local markets in Sawtell. Little miss discovered lucky dips, she got a cute little stuffed duck.
Jamie opted out of coming to the BUTTERFLY HOUSE (I don't know why). It was something both Little miss and I were looking forward to. It didn't disappoint and I would definitely go back again.
We did have a few nights of super windy weather. I hate the wind. I've found its even worse in a camper trailer because it flaps a bit, something I didn't even think of. We had a few nights with wind gusts up to 70 km an hour, the camper trailer was perfectly fine. I was just a bit tired, pacing around the annex at all hours of the morning not being able to sleep. Its amazing how much noisier it is at night. Jamie and Little miss didn't seem to even hear anything.
We left at the tail end of Winter. We didn't have a heater, we couldn't find a cheap one before we left they had all sold out. We didn't really want to spend $100-$200 on a heater. These first few weeks were a bit chilly (we got some single digits over night). I finally found a few hot water bottles at Kmart, they warmed up the beds before hoping in and made it nicer to go to sleep. We will pick up a cheap electric heater next year when they first go on sale. The tricky part about leaving like we did was there wasn't a heap of planning beforehand.
Lessons we learned:
- We still hate bush turkeys
- Set a realistic budget for activities
- Picnic parties at the beach are fun (except for sandy food)
- I'm a really light sleeper
- Wind is even more noisy at night
- A heater is important over winter, even the warm climates
- Hot water bottles are toasty warm
Places we visited:
- Local Shops
- Bonville Headlands
- The Beach
- The Big Banana
- The Butterfly House
