The Lace Monitor Incident

We had fish and chips for dinner (delicious chips from the local grocer and fish from the fish man who came through the caravan park) and because we don't have our floor we ate inside at the dinette. Jamie had said he'd heard a lace monitor and it had come in the annex a bit but he didn't seem overly worried. I was more worried about getting a photo and I'd missed out on seeing it.

In the middle of dinner we heard the rustling and sure enough the lace monitor was back.  I raced out to get a photo and shoo it away (everything was packed away so I wasn't too worried about it getting into any food), and all I caught was the tail end. Literally, just a tail heading back out the back.

Little miss raced out to see as well, she was just as excited as I was. It was quite big, at least a metre long, so I popped next door to let them know it was heading their way.  It sneaked up behind them and no sooner than I had said it was heading their way it was right behind them. It headed off back into the bush.

I did end up get my photo, which was exciting for me. The back annex wall got put up that night. It got pegged down tight. We didn't need any more stray animals coming into the annex. Little miss was very curious to see the lace monitor and wondered why it was out of the wildlife park. She had no idea they were in wild.

Lessons we learned:

  • Fish and chips are delicious
  • Freshly cooked chips from the local grocer at Scotts Head are amazing
  • I really love fish and chips
  • No floor means meals are eaten inside
  • All annex walls are required to keep stray wildlife out
  • Lace monitors are noisy
  • Lace monitors are huge
  • This lace monitor wasn't scared of people
  • They can sneak up on you
  • Little miss thought the lace monitor had escaped
