When we arrived at Corindi Beach I'd been watching the weather radar and it looked like most of the wet weather had passed by. When checking in the receptionist hadn't heard of the windy weather but assured me that we had a well protected spot for the southerly winds that were expected.
After we had positioned the camper trailer on the slab (a beautiful wide concrete slab, very happy with it) I double checked the weather app. No rain was on the radar. Jamie suggested we wait and head into town rather than getting set up and unpacking straight away. I hesitated but was pretty sure that the worst had already passed over so determined to get sorted (probably because I was tired) I made the decision to start setting up.
Big mistake. It felt like as soon as we opened everything up the rain came pouring down. Little miss got soaked (didn't wear her rain coat) and ended up cuddling under my dressing gown inside the camper trailer to keep warm. The problem with a camper trailer is once you get started you can't really stop. So here we are in the wet trying frantically to get enough tension on the canvas to put the poles in. Instead we got massive puddles that hung down between each section. With each big puddle came what felt like a dripping waterfall over the edge. It got so heavy at one point that the entire annex collapsed under the weight of the water (It wasn't fully assembled).
Each time we thought it had stopped raining and tried to do a little bit more, sure enough it would rain again. It was like a comedy of errors. By the time we got everything up it had stopped raining (just our luck). I was soaked through and cold, so was little miss so hot showers were in order. The positives are that the inside was dry and the slightly bent poles (from collapsing) were easily fixed.
Next time I think we'll wait for the wet weather to pass before setting up.
Lessons we Learned:
- Weather apps aren't always right
- I hate rain and wind
- Wet weather gear is important
- If Jamie says to wait to set up, we should wait
- Jamie was right (this time)
- Rain on a half built annex roof gets very heavy
- I hate wet weather and setting up
- The rain will stop when you've finished setting up
- I love waterfalls but not from our annex
- The inside kept dry
- Hot showers are important
