We almost missed out on the camel rides. The windy weather and trying to see so much while in Port Macquarie made it difficult. But on our last day in Port Macquarie the weather was perfect and when I called they said the camel rides were on.
We tried to get there for the 9.30 ride the very first one but we didn't get up the beach quickly enough.mainly because when I out in the map I just put in lighthouse beach I didn't search the camel rides which would've brought us up closer and we would've made it on time (don't tell Jamie).
Then I didn't realise everyone was lining up and then I thought I better get in the line before we miss out again. Little miss and Jamie were collecting shells and having a lovely time. So once I finally joined the line (if I'd done it when I first got there we would've made the second rides) we were first in line for the third ride. It wasn't such a bad thing because I could see what was going to happen and be a bit prepared.
I will admit when I saw the camels getting up I thought uh oh maybe I should be going on this thing I'll probably tumble off. I said to Jamie that maybe he should go (trying to chicken out) but he said I was the one wanting to do it and we came all this way so I was going not him.
We got our helmet on and waited to for every one in our group to get theirs on and that's when little started asking what the camels names were. By the third camel he said Alice and she decided that's who she wanted to ride on and got disappointed when someone else was given that camel to ride.
We were the lucky last ones on, on the very front camel Wongai (not sure if that's the right spelling he was named after an Aboriginal mob in WA). I was glad we were at the front. I sat on the seat first and little miss sat in front. She wasn't quite old enough to ride by herself. Normally they would've put someone else on front with us but because of Covid 19 we didn't have to share which was nice.
Jamie was in charge of videos and photos of us on the camel. We didn't tumble off when it stood up, it was really bumping and I felt like I was going to fall off. Then we got led down the beach and it was really bumpy. More bumpy than I expected. I tried to take a few photos and videos of us but I was worried I'd drop my phone and little miss kept saying to hold on again.
Little miss kept look at the sand and pointing to shells this is how our conversation went the entire way down the beach
LM: that's a beautiful shell mummy can I get that one?
Me: No we're riding on the camels
LM: but it's such a pretty shell
Me: we can collect it when we get back
LM: look at that pretty shell mummy
Me: yes very pretty shell. Hold on please.
LM: can I have it?
Again I think I appreciated the experience more than her, but we took heaps of pictures so hopefully she has some good memories. Half way through the ride we stop and one of the 2 people operating the rides takes some photos of us on the camel. Some girls riding the camel behind us also took some photos.
Then we rode back up the beach. For the ride back up I talked to the owner and leader of the camels and it was really interesting talking with him. He did say they had to put a weight limit of 120kg for riders not because the camels couldn't carry that much, they could, but they had an incident where a rider fell on top of one of the workers as the camels sat back down.
When we got back all the camels were lines up and then some girls at the back squealed. Their camel sat down without them knowing that he was going to. Our camel sat down without us falling off (lucky or Jamie would've caught it on camera).
It was amazing!!
- 3-4 year old ride with an adult
- Lucky they do
- Little miss wasn't holding on as much by the end
- Google maps to the right location makes it easier than running up the beach
- Soft sand is harder to walk on when your in a hurry
- If there's a line join it
- Sometimes it's a good thing to miss the next round
- Jamie is stubborn
- It looked like I would fall off when the camel stood up
- I didn't fall off and neither did Little miss
- Little miss noticed more shells
- Little miss loves shells
- I think little miss would've been just as happy to collect shells on the beach
- Camels are bumpy
- Camel ride are great fun
- I think I had more fun than little miss
- You get used to the bumpiness after a while
- I'm glad we did it
- I'd do it again
- Camels smell gross
