The Gaol was originally a used as a Goal but used as an Internment Camp during world war 1 housing a group of wealthier well educated men who were seen as a threat during the war.
The building was fairly run down with a few that had roofs. We did get to go inside some of the cells and they had interactive exhibits with information about the prisoners and their experiences. Little miss wasn't interested in listening to the information (some of it wasn't suitable and had warnings) but she did have a turn inside one of the cells. She was curious as to why there were so many cages, and when we explained that people lived in them a long time ago she decided that she didn't like the little cages and they weren't much fun.
Shortly after we arrived the clouds looked a little ominous and sure enough there was a sprinkle of rain. Not all the buildings had a roof so we waited out the rain in the new kitchen. It was amazing to see how big the Gaol was and we went into the silent cells (where the misbehaving prisoners went), they would've been scary being pitch black and found a swallows nest in the corner.
It was a definite must see for us.
