Writing this I have to admit I’m still a little in shock about what happened. We seem to have a bit of a bad run with animals. This happened over about a week. I was sitting in my chair in annex and I saw something move out of the corner of my eye. It was a quick grey blur so I was pretty sure it was a mouse. I chased it out the corner of the annex and that was the last I thought I’d see it. But it wasn’t.
Again a few days later we see it running around the edges of the annex. This time Jamie sees it as well and we madly shake the edges to try and get it out before I watch it run out the back flap and into the bushes. Again I thought that it was the last we’d see of the mouse. But it wasn’t.
Yesterday again we saw it running around the annex. I got a chance to take a photo of it nibbling the spilled sunflower seeds that I dropped out the front of the annex. I had tried to clean them up but only so much I could reach to get rid of them. Again we chased it away and knew that everything needed to be cleaned. I woke up overnight sure that I could hear the mouse; Jamie did as well, but eventually fell back asleep thinking I was just paranoid.
Today we pulled everything out and reattached the floor so there were absolutely no little gaps for the mouse to get back in. After pulling everything out of the annex, we pulled the floor out and gave it a really good clean. Everything was dried before putting all back in. It took almost all day to get everything put back in. By the end I was exhausted. I knew the camper trailer needed to be cleaned as well, not sure if the mouse had got in there as well but thought I’d leave it for tomorrow.
Little miss fussed a bit before bed and Jamie started sneezing (he’s allergic to cats and maybe mice?) so he headed out of the camper trailer while I stayed in with little miss. Eventually she fell asleep and Jamie came and got into bed. We had the light out and we were just waiting for the midnight fireworks to end this year.
I heard this little noise and asked Jamie to turn on the light (the switch is on his side) and sure enough the bloody mouse was sitting on the step to little miss’s bed. I went into panic mode and was madly trying to find something that I could catch the mouse with. Eventually I found one of little miss’s buckets but by the time I’d found the bucket he was no longer poking him furry little nose out from behind the cushions.
We then had the fun task of going through all the stuff that had been dumped in the camper trailer over the past week (we’ve had Christmas and New Year coming up so I’ve kind of been a bit slack) to find the mouse. After going through all the possible hiding places in the camper trailer, even looking through the boxes in the hope we could find him. The mystery mouse had turned into Houdini and he was gone. There was no way I was sleeping without knowing exactly where that mouse had gone, and neither was Jamie.
We probably looked comical, standing still looking at each other trying to strain to hear any noise. We then concluded that the only possibility is that he escaped the camper trailer and was once again in the annex. I peeked out and moved a few cushions and the mouse was there, running around on my newly cleaned floors. I had to convince Jamie to come and help me catch the mouse and he reluctantly came to help.
We watched the naughty little thing climb up the towels to walk all over the table. As we watched it, trying to get a good chance of catching it, we made a list of everything needing to be cleaned again or thrown out. We both noted how quickly the bloody mouse was running up and around everything.
It hid under the electric frying pan and we got ready to pouch. We had a bucket of water to put it in; there was no chasing the mouse away again. It managed to dodge us and ended up on the floor again, and Jamie had the brilliant idea of using the tongs to grab the mouse. Jamie managed to grab hold of the mouse and drop it into the bucket of water. That was when I breathed a sigh of relief; the mouse was caught now and would die in the bucket of water and not be any bother to us again. But I was wrong again.
The mouse managed to swim around in circles and somehow escape the bucket of water. I will admit that I screamed like a little girl and ran away into the camper trailer. Yes I did. Jamie heroically chased the mouse and grabbed it with the tongs again before swiftly removing it from the annex. I really hope that's the end of our mouse issue.
We then got to spend our new years eve cleaning everything out of the camper trailer and making a giant pile of washing to do tomorrow. We even striped the beds, it looks like the mouse had got into little miss’s bed. So she got moved into our bed so everything could be cleaned. This isn’t how I expected to spend my new years eve but I'm happy to say that we will be going into 2021 with the cleanest camper trailer ever.
I had a quick shower after I finished cleaning and hoped into bed in time to watch the fireworks on TV. My only problem now is my paranoia, that there is more than 1 mouse running around terrorising us.
We did get offered some advice to keep mice away. Tea bags (used or not), moth balls and peppermint seem to be favourites. We opted for a plug in mouse deterrent. It might not work, but so far so good.
