To See In NSW - Jervis Bay Maritime Museum

This is an incredible maritime museum.  I could easily have spent all day here, Little miss too. The staff are so friendly.  It was also really affordable to visit.  Little miss and I walked to the museum from the caravan park, through town along the bike path. I was really impressed with the bike path; it made walking around town so much easier.

When we got there I wasn’t sure how interested Little miss was going to be, some places can be a bit hit and miss for her (like most parent will understand). This is a must see maritime museum, Little miss had so much fun and was really disappointed when we had to go. They have an old passenger ferry that you can go inside and have a look. I can't even tell you how many times little miss went on and off the ferry, it was amazing to see that they had restored it to it's original colours.  They have some sections roped off, and you can’t go up to the top but they had a big poster with information about the ferry (it was made in Huskisson) and a video playing that had information as well.  Little miss loved sitting on the chairs and pretending we were going on a ferry ride.

They had some amazing information about the passenger ferry and it's history as well as others built around the same time. There were boats and models to look at. When we went down the stairs we got to see a really interesting collection of shells. They were amazing and we spent a long time looking at the shells with little miss asking which shell was which.

They had heaps of information about the Cape St George Lighthouse and the disaster that it was.  Unfortunately we didn't get a chance to visit it but it was interesting reading about it.

They had some rooms with exhibits about Captain Cook and early sailing equipment. There was also an exhibit with an artist.  Little miss spent a long time looking at the artwork and pointing out the different Australian animals that she recognised.

There was another room that had a lot of information on the Jervis Bay area and the aboriginal people who lived there. There was also information on the disaster with the Naval war ship which sank off of Jervis Bay.

The Museum wasn't the only thing to explore, there was also the grounds.  We could walk along the boardwalks and see the thousands of crabs in the mangroves.  It was amazing to see. I loved the crabs bright coloured claws.  I spent a lot of our walk along the boardwalk telling Little miss stories, which seems to be a favourite of hers at the moment.

We wandered around the little pond and looked at the boat shed before heading back inside to have one last ride on the ferry and a look through the gift shop.  I love looking in the gift shops. Some of the most amazing little trinkets can be found in them.
