Week 22 Recap

We decided after the Christmas party to stay the night rather than head back (if you missed Week 21 recap). As it turns out it was a great thing we did. When we got back the following morning I ran into the park manager and he asked how we held up after the rain.  I’d seen on the weather app that we’d had rain while we were away but apparently it came down really heavy and in sheets. It came down so quickly that it flooded the camp kitchen.  I would never have known it had rained so heavily. We had a few puddles in the corners of the annex but that isn’t unusual if it rains heavily, and we are on a slope so that wouldn’t help.

We discovered the amazing PANBOOLA WETLANDS, and have spent many hours exploring the different walking tracks.  I’ve been amazed by the variety of wildlife you can see in and around the wetlands.

In the lead up to Christmas we explored a little of the surrounding area. We have been taking great care not to go anywhere too crowded, because of Covid 19. I suppose most people who are travelling have had to change things along the way, life we have.  We have adapted well and so far (fingers crossed) haven’t had any issues.

While driving on the highway in, I saw the sign to POTOROO PALACE and knew it would be on my list of places to go to visit. A few mornings we got up and I knew it was cold, the changing colour ooshies that little miss had collected, had turned slightly pink while not being in the fridge.

In the lead up to Christmas we ended up having the BIRD OF PREY INCIDENT. All animals have to eat, and I made sure to keep well away from the bird of prey.

Christmas for us was a quiet event. We stayed at our site; little miss playing with her treasures and toys for the entire day.  We had easy to prepare meals that didn’t require much effort; we even had Santa pancakes for brekkie.

Boxing day we made the trip back to Broulee to visit my family. Little miss was meeting a few of her Aunts for the first time (they live interstate). Little miss had a great time, we visited the playground and she even got a new bike. Little miss was so excited to ride her new bike, after a quick ride she didn’t want to ride again. I think it was because there was no handle to push her along with, and she had to do all the hard work herself.

We didn’t plan to stay the night this time, so was mindful that we had a 2 hour drive back and didn’t want to leave it too late on the road. Lucky we left when we did. There was a severe thunderstorm that rolled in and hit not long after we left.  If we had left 15 minutes earlier we wouldn’t have had any rain on the trip back. When I messaged to let them know we were back safely, they said the storm was unlike anything they had ever seen. There was hail and everything. The storm cell that was down near us sat off the coast for about an hour. Of course little miss fell asleep on the way back, and then was up for half the night.

After all the rain we finally had a nice day. While Jamie was watching the cricket, little miss and I wandered into town.  We got little miss a kids camera for Christmas, she loves taking photos as well. She decided to test it out. So we took photos of every single flower between the Caravan Park and town. It was a long walk in, but I was pleased to see her enjoying her present. We had an ice cream from the takeaway shop before heading back.

Later in the afternoon I suggested a bike ride to PANBOOLA WETLANDS. Little miss didn’t want to go, until she remembered she had training wheels on her new bike. Once she remembered her training wheels she was excited and ready to ride. We made it all the way to the race track before turning around and heading back.  We did meet a local who told me about a bird book for the south coast. He was lovely to chat with, even if little miss was getting a little restless. Little miss only had 1 crash riding back. That was because she was looking back at me rather than looking where she was riding and she rode straight into a tree.  Luckily there were no tears, she hopped back on and kept on going.
