To See In NSW - Wairo Beach

Wairo Beach and Crampton Island, what a stunning place to watch the sunrise. Absolutely incredible. I had no idea this beach or little island even existed, Jamie and his family have visited for a number of years so they knew all about it’s beauty. You can follow the path to enter from the caravan park at Lake Tabourie. You can see Tabourie Creek to the right as you walk along the beach and Crampton Island is straight out in front. Access to Crampton Island varies at times, when we visited it was accessible at low tide with no problems. You could also access Tabourie Beach from Wairo Beach, but again I suspect that too is variable.

There are a lot of warning signs about this being a dangerous beach, we didn’t swim at the beach (it wasn’t swimming weather) but probably not the beach family beach to visit. There are lots of rips up and down the beach and it’s an unpatrolled beach.

I didn’t get a chance to explore Crampton Island (I got called back just after sunrise) but I would’ve loved to. Jamie and his Cousins and the kids went fishing on Crampton Island. They did well too, catching a really good-sized brim. Jamie caught a shark, about a metre or so in length. The fishing line snapped as it got close to the shore and the shark swam away. One of the second cousins also caught a baby shark which was also released.

We spent a fair bit of time playing at the beach, little miss made friends with a little girl who had a kite. They took turns flying the kite on the beach, before building the biggest sand cakes together. Even though we had some miserable weather it was still perfect to visit the beach for a play.

A pair of hooded plovers also regularly nest near the entrance to the creek, they hadn’t been seen this season. I was on the lookout each time we went onto the beach. I’m determined that at some point I’ll see these beautiful birds for real life (thanks Bluey).
