Travel Plans!!!

I wrote this is the lead up to leaving today. Not everyone understands why we've chosen to travel the way we are at the moment and to be honest it doesn't really matter what anyone else thinks.

We've been in Coffs Harbour for 12 weeks now. We had planned to get jobs and top up the bank while we waited out wet season. Jamie got an amazing job. The kind of job that is too good to walk away from. I to have a fantastic job (although it is casual) that has flexible hours. But we can't have the best of both worlds. We can't travel Australia and have fantastic jobs (that both require a stable place, there's no working from home or online businesses here).

I'm not quite ready to settle down and do all the normal things... yet. I know that we will need to do that at some point and looking at big schools for little miss to start school next year has really made me realise that we need to make it a priority and settle down for her.

The big BUT I have is that we've hardly left the state and we haven't seen red dirt yet. I feel like there's so much to see and do and I just don't want to settle down and feel like we wasted this opportunity. Travelling and being on the road for the last 10 months has been incredible and we have had an absolute blast. It has changed us all in ways we never thought it would. It's been the best thing for us and all good things come to an end. I'm just not ready for that end yet.

In saying all of that how can we travel while maintaining jobs? We have a few different options.

  • We can do weekend trips
  • We can do short trips away
  • We can take a month off and travel
  • We can do yearly holidays
None of those are particular enticing for me at the moment. We are coming up to when we originally planned to head off north to see the top end (like most people I expect).

The compromise we came up with was Little miss and I will travel for a short time by ourselves leaving Jamie behind to continue working. It's not a perfect compromise, I'd really love for Jamie to be able to come with us. He's only been at his job for a short time (and loving every minute of it) so taking time off isn't an option. This was the only way we could come up with being able to do a little more travel before we concentrate on settling down.

The problem we have is how to travel? I can't tow the caravan and I can't put the tail gate up and down or push the pop top up (its too heavy). Jamie also needs some where to live while we're gone. I was pretty certain with all things considered me taking the caravan wasn't a good idea, so it will be left behind with Jamie. That still leaves me with the dilemma of what do we stay in while travelling?

We could travel in motels and cabins. However the average price I saw was $90 per night! That's about $4500 just on accommodation (not counting fuel, food, activities), and that's being conservative, some places were $150 per night.

Little miss and I came up with the idea of camping. We've camped a fair bit and we did get rid of a whole bunch of our camping stuff, we do only need a small amount to get set up. It means we can cut our accommodation costs down to about $40 per night, which will save us $2500.

It definitely hasn't cost us $2500 to get all the bits and bobs we need so I feel like that's a win.
