We've been in sugar cane country and little miss has been excited about the cane trains. When I checked what there was to do in Sarina I was super excited about visiting the sugar shed to find out all about how sugar cane is turned into sugar.
There were heaps of kids on the tour, and they all got name tags. Little miss was super excited to be Effie (and kept forgetting what her name tags said). The tour guide was super fun and presented the history of the sugar cane industry really well. There were plenty of opportunities for the kids to participate or find different things through out.
Early Harvester
When we went into the factory, we got to see what they do next door at the sugar mill (that's where the name tags came into play). Each machine had a name, and each child had a name tag that matched up with the machines. We got to taste sugar cane juice, which was different than what I expected (kind of pearish but not at the same time) and chew of some sugar cane.
We then went to the tasting room and that is where the fun began. Little miss was the first in the line for the fairy floss. It was the best fairy floss I've ever tasted. We then got to taste test the different syrups, chutneys and sauces that they make before the alcohol came out. They had a number of different liquors to taste test, as that's the main use for their sugar cane. They make small batches of rum which are very popular and when they sell out, that's it for the year.

We highly recommend visiting the sugar shed.
