I will also mention we visited the fossicking parks. You can get a fossicking license and hire the equipment to go fossicking in the tourist areas. We chose not to go down this route, mainly because it's really hard work with no promise of sapphires.
We really loved our time, and I have to say I got a little hooked in the end. Chasing those shiny gems (even if I knew it wouldn't be anything massive) was such a thrill.
