Wide Load Trucks

When we first headed in land I had absolutely no idea what we were in for. On the way to Emerald from Rockhampton we saw our first road train. It wasn't very big (by our standards at the end), there was a pilot that warned us of the wide load and we pulled just about off the road. There was a second wide load before we made it to Emerald and by that time I knew to move completely off the road.

The road trains got progressively longer as we got further into the outback. They were so amazing that when we stopped in towns, I couldn't help feeling like a big kid and waving as they drove past. It's one of the most amazing things and I will truly never forget them. I did slow down when I could see one coming in the opposite direction (you can see for miles ahead), the wind they produce is incredible. And we weren't towing anything at the time and could still feel it.

We did a loop back to Townsville, and I can't believe how busy the highway was with so many road trains. On our way back to the Gemfields we knew what to expect. The only advice I have to offer is, if there is a police escort for the wide load, you know it's going to be a big one and you need to get right off the road. The police will tell you if you haven't pulled over enough. And wow they are huge.
